About the Author:
Andy Goldsworthy is a British sculpture, landscape artist, photographer, and environmentalist. Goldsworthy’s works are site-specific and the materials used for the sculptures can be found in nature; he takes ordinary objects, such as leaves and sticks, to create his pieces. He uses his camera to document his process and work.
Goal:
The main goal for this project was to create a book with three sections. The first section was will hold the essay called “Environmental Sculpture” by Andrew Causey. The second part of the book had photographs of Goldsworthy’s projects and the final section of the book held the biography. The challenge of this project was to come up with a theme that brought these three sections together as a whole and that the viewer can see consistently.
Like every project, whenever I am faced with a challenge, I dived into research. After reading articles, interviews, and watching documentaries, I was able to learn more about Goldsworthy’s works. I learned that within every project, he focused on how objects shift over time. This was something that Goldsworthy focused on.
Unlike many artists, Goldsworthy expects and wants his work to move around, change its shapes, and disappear one day. He emphasizes that change is inevitable and it is natural for nature to do so. It was important to me that this theme was shown throughout the book.
To reflect Goldsworthy’s theme, I made the colors of each page and the text box sizes shift. The texts start off as a wide text box but as the book progresses, the column gets smaller and smaller. As for the pages at the beginning start with white pages and in the middle it becomes black and by the end of the book, the pages are white again. The color of the covers is three different kinds of grays to reflect this as well.
Process:
And this was the final result! Please look through the book he see how the Shifting Nature came out!
